Different colleges and universities set different standards and have various requirements when it comes to accepting enrollees. Most commonly, universities use The College Board or SAT Reasoning Test to assess college applications. But there are also colleges who use American College Testing Program or ACT, Educational Testing Service or GRE and Graduate Management Admission Council or GMAT.
One’s college admission test depends on your choice of university or college. Although these tests differ, one thing remains constant and that is all these exams will gauge a student’s readiness for college. For students who are about to take college admission tests, here are some of the tips on how to pass and eventually study at your dream school:
Preparation before the Exam:
- Study! A college admission test measures everything that you have learned in elementary until high school. The exam centers on three subject areas namely critical reading, mathematics, and writing so try reading on your old notes.
- Answer practice exams! There are available practice tests and try to complete the exam honestly without trying to peep on your notes or disregarding time allotted for a specific question. Answering the official full practice test gives you the idea on what to expect during the exam proper. When the examination day comes, you will be more confident in answering the test question as you already practiced the exam beforehand.
- Pay close attention to your weak areas. So if ever you are having a hard time with math, then practice solving all the more. But never forget to still study on areas where you find it easy as this will be areas where you are sure that your answer is correct. Master the skill of answering easy questions first and then when you are already sure on your answers, focus on the hard ones. Hard questions are time consuming so you may run out time if you answer them first.
- If you have time and the resources, you can attend college admission classes. These classes are very helpful as instructors give you the tips, hints, and coach you on what you should do when answering exams. There will also be simulation exams given so there are greater chances that you get favorable results during the exam proper.
Preparation during the Test Day:
- Make sure that all the things that you need for the exam are already inside your bag. No. 2 pencils should be sharpened well, calculator is functioning, eraser, identification card, and admission ticket for the exam is ready. Preparing them before hand will prevent cramming.
- Sleep early before the exam so that you will be able to wake up on time. Eat a light meal before heading to the exam venue. Your brain needs glucose so you need to have a good meal to keep your brain cell functioning well.
- Arrive on time. If you can make it one hour before the exam starts then the better. When you have more time to relax, you can think well so you will have lesser chances of having poor scores.
- Be confident! Trust yourself and believe in your capabilities. When you are positive that you can do it, then you can surely will as it is the mind over matter.
