In the world that we live in today, it pays to have an edge. Gone are the days when finishing high school was enough to give you a well paying job and a bright future. That is why going to college to earn your degree is an important first step to live the life you have always dreamed of.

Going to college starts with writing an application letter and/or college application essay. Just like when applying for a job, a college application letter says so much about yourself and why you intend to study in a university of your choice.

The college’s first impression of you and your admission to that college can greatly depend on how you wrote your application essay. So if you want to study in your dream college or university, then start by writing a good application letter that shows your strengths.

Although there is not a standardized format for all college admissions requirements, below are some of the ways on how you can make your application letter appealing to the one who is reading it.

  • Follow the rules in making a formal letter. All the parts should be there. Remember that your letter is like your college of choice’s first impression of you so you must present it well. If you are having doubts with the grammar, spelling, and sentence construction, it is best to seek help and writing tips. Seeking others opinions really help in making you formulate a college application letter of good quality.
  • Research and find information on the college that you are planning to apply. Your letter would include the reasons why you desire to choose the college so you need relevant information to back you up. Giving compliments and praises to the college is also advised as it will make the one reading your letter feel that you really want to be part of the college. Just make sure that you do not over do your compliments in your letter and application essay. It is also best that you dig into information on the college as to what kind of students do they want so as you know if you are suited in their college or not. Researching through the college’s website will give you an idea on this matter.
  • Include in your letter the reasons why you would be a good student in the school. Apart from putting in your academic qualifications, share your interests like sports, music, and the art are also encouraged. This will give the one reading your letter a clue on what kind of student you will be. Well rounded students are what most colleges and universities like so you must always present yourself in this manner to have higher chances of getting an admission. But never exaggerate on your personal achievements or qualifications, especially when you do not have enough proof that you accomplished such.
  • Include recommendations in your college application packet. Recommendations can be given by your high school principal, guidance counselor, and even your teachers as they are the best persons who know your character as a student. Having people recommend you will give you higher chances of being admitted in college as the one reading your letter will have a hint on what kind of student you were in high school.
  • Be sincere! When you write what you truly feel, your thoughts will be pouring in and you will not have a problem in formulating sentences. Even if a college application letter should be written in a formal manner, it is always best when you write it in a manner that is not too structured as it is appealing and more interesting to read. Make sure that you have written are things that you really feel and accomplished. Letters whether it is a college application essay or applicaiton letter, is more convincing when the one who has written it is sincere.
